I’m definitely not planning to read only from home, I know myself too well for this. I know there’ll still be library books and e-books, especially from my e-book subscription. Also, I always read on my e-reader in bed and that’s what’s always in my bag. Nevertheless I’ll be trying to read all the books lingering on my study’s floor and various bookshelves. There are 109 of them (actually 107 at the moment, as two are on their way to me) so I should be able to read all of them this year. Especially that I expect to DNF a few as some were probably never for me and some stayed too long on my TBR pile and are not for me anymore.
I’ve first set up a goal of 45 books from my TBR for this year. As I looked at the unread books on the floor, I realised that there are too many and I need to make teh oiles smaller this year. I went for 45 as I’ll be turning 45 this year, it seemed like a nice number. And then I’ve made the list of all the books and decided that 45 wasn’t enough. That I need to get rid of my TBR all together.
I miss buying books and reading them (almost) immediately. That’s why I’m reading so many library books lately. I can’t put them on a pile and forget about them. It’s a kind of substitution for buying books, because I want to read them now.
I did it with my birthday books. It was such a joy to read them directly after receiving them. Not adding them to the piles, but enjoying the stories I’ve chosen in this moment. Because when I choose to buy a book, it’s because something in this story is appealing to me now, so it should also be read now.
I want more of this in my life, of the simple joy of reading the stories that appeal to me in the moment, without any feeling of guilt about the books that have been waiting to be read for ages.
So here we go again with a year of reading from home. In a hope that the second attempt will be more succesful than the first one. It’s not going to be easy to achieve this goal, especially with my library job and quite a few chunksters waiting on those piles, but I certainly hope to get to them all.
